OK kids, add it to your schedule, let's meet July 10th 2010, 6am at the Marina Safeway in San Francisco for the third run of La Ruta Loca Randonnee (LRLR) a 200k ride off Mixed Terrain following brevet format (timed controls and 13.5 hrs to finish) with about 15000K elevation. Sounds crazy? Well that is part of the name...
La Ruta Loca Randonnee (The original NorCal 200k Mixed Terrain self flagellation ordeal) was first run July 19 2008, you can read about that experience here. and the 2009 edition here. This page feeds from a google calendar and shows only future events.
These are proposed dates for Mixed Terrain rides (paved/off road in one ride) that Start In San Francisco. Once the dates are final I will make a note in this page. The idea is to build up skills and endurance leading to a run of La Ruta Loca Randonnee (LRLR), a 200k Mixed Terrain epic ride scheduled for July 10th (2010).

When: Saturday, March, 20th, 2010 at 8:00am
Where: Strauss Statue (GG Bridge)
Description: A good 50 miles of riding, 17 of them on fireroads, approximately 6000 feet of climbing. It sounds short but believe me it is not a ride in the park but it is not a grueling ride either, just right. This makes a great first Mixed Terrain ride for an accomplished "roadie".
When: Saturday, April, 10th, 2010 at 7:00am
Where: Strauss Statue (GG Bridge)
Description: This is a hard ride of about 80 miles, lots of climbing. All done on fireroads but some of them are in better condition than others. Bolinas Ridge is notorious for being in excellent condition one day and bad two weeks later, also it can get cold inside that canopy of trees, be pepared for extreme weather conditions. Like all other rides here you face many different micro climates so clothes and food preparation are key.
When: Saturday, April, 17th, 2010 at 8:00am
Where: Strauss Statue (GG Bridge)
Description: This ride is a little over 50 miles and has some serious climbing (8000+ ft climbing) but is is all done on maintained fireroads or paved roads. There are some sections of steep climbing on loose soil and also some good descents. A demanding ride with great rewards for those who do it. About 50%/50% Fireroad/pavement.
When: Saturday, May, 1st, 2010 at 7:00am
Where: Strauss Statue (GG Bridge)
Description: A combination of two of the previous rides. First we do most of the Traditional Mixed Terrain Ride, on the way back to San Francisco instead of climbing Camino Alto, turn left towards Corte Madera following the Mixed Terrain 101 route from that point to the GG Bridge. The result is an 80 miler of 50%/50% fireroads/pavement. A tough, though ride that will test the endurance of most riders. Lots of climbing. Pack a bike light just in case.
When: Saturday, May, 15th, 2010 at 7:00am

When: Saturday, July, 10th, 2010 at 6:00am
Where: Marina Safeway Start (15 Marina Blvd, San Francisco)
Description: 2010 edition of the original NorCal Mixed terrain event, La Ruta Loca Randonnee! ~15000 ft. in ~124 miles of fireroads and pavement. This is NOT a race but a (FREE) self flagellation ordeal. This is a one day epic ride in all the sense of the word, not a good ride to do if you have never done other Mixed Terrain rides however it is an excellent ride if you come with the right mindset and bicycle. 200k of joy if you like me value a good ride. We start At the Marina Safeway in San Francisco and ride the Marin Headlands up and down to Muir Woods then up to Pantoll Ranger Station continuing to Lake Lagunitas. Connect to the Bolinas Ridge fire road via Fairfax Bolinas Rd. Pay a visit to Mountain Bike Cycles in Point Reyes Station before returning via pavement to do the Paradise loop. Wait, you are not there yet! At this point the temptation to bail is great, resit it! go once more up Mt tam this time to the West Point Inn and connect again to Pantoll Ranger Station. A few miles of pavement to get to the Marin headlands and then after a few more hills you'll have the Golden Gate Bridge under your eyes. It should keep you busy for the best part of a day and maybe some of the night, it may be a good idea to bring a light just in case. In the past different types of bikes have been used. Cross, Classic lugged, Randonneuring and also MTBs. Each rider finds the best/most efficient bike for his style and considers the terrain to be covered, pavement, gravel/fire roads and some short rocky sections. Needless to say our choice of bike and tires is critical. (Please note: This is a FREE event. This is NOT an official randonneuring event, just a harder than usual training ride, you will be riding at your own risk!)
